Check the packaging on compost before you buy it and select a peat-free variety. The compost may look and feel different to the type you’re used to, but the plants love it just the same. The world class gardens of the National Trust and RHS are now almost 100% peat-free and if they can do it, so can we!
Peat bogs act as a carbon ‘store’, absorbing, on average, 10 times more carbon than any other ecosystem, including forests. They take hundreds of years to form and by digging them up we are releasing tonnes of carbon back into the atmosphere.
