Take the bottle completely out of the equation and get your shampoo in a bar. The KinKind shampoo bars, pictured here, are gorgeous. You can even get an anti-dandruff one. Available online at www.kinkind.co.uk . Other brands we love are Lush, Friendly and Bomb Cosmetics.
The Kilo Scrubby Sponge is our favourite Eco-swap yet and is an absolute must-have for the scrubby sponge lover! It’s actually better than a plastic one because it keeps its abrasiveness longer, it’s reusable, washable and biodegradable. Available online or from discerning kitchenware stockists.
Citric acid is available online or in health food shops, doesn’t contain nasty chemicals and doesn’t come in a plastic bottle! Much to our surprise, it cleared away thick limescale from the toilet bowl after a few hours, with considerably less elbow grease than usual too. Push the cold water out of the toilet bowl, into the waste pipe, with a brush, and replace with a large jug of hot water, then add about 100-150g/1 mug of citric acid and leave to work for an hour or more (depending on how thick the limescale is). Brush and flush and marvel at your limescale-free toilet!
Bio-Catolet is made from 100% waste paper and doesn’t involve mining the Earth’s natural resources needed to produce clay and quartz sand based litters. It’s available at Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Pets at Home, among others. It’s safer for your cat and doesn’t harbour odours.
Choose bamboo make-up remover pads and cut out another unnecessary single-use item from your shopping list. They work in exactly the same way as cotton-wool pads but last for years, so will save you money in the long run. They also make a great gift and are such an easy Eco-swap.
Don’t worry we’re not suggesting you give up toilet paper, just choose a recycled one! ‘Who Gives A Crap’, featured here, donate 50% of profits to building toilets where they are most needed. Buy online at www.uk.whogivesacrap.org. Cushelle are now making a recycled paper and most larger supermarkets stock their own brand too.
